The cadets of the Theresan Military Academy will be joined this year by four cadets of West Point Military Academy (USA) in opening the 86th Officers’ Ball.

The USMA cadets will be commissioned in May 2012. Between August 2010 and December 2011 they all studied one semester at the Theresan Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. They attended German classes and participated in the training of the Austrian cadets – in the lecture hall, the field and on the dance floor. Participating in the opening of the Officers’ Ball is the highlight of their dance training.

U.S.Army Captain invites Hope Solo - goalkeeper of the U.S. women's soccer team - via You Tube to the Officer's Ball!

A Captain of the U.S. Army, currently deployed to Afghanistan, invited the attractive goalkeeper of the U.S. women's soccer team via You Tube video to the Officer's Ball on the 20th of January in Vienna's Hofburg. In the video he explains that he and his buddy are such big fans of her, but neither of them asks her if she would like to merry one of them. He explains that he knows how much she appreciates the soldiers and that she likes Vienna very much. Therefore he invites her personally to attend the Officer's Ball in Vienna. An article about the video was even published in an Army review and on the homepage of Stars and Stripes (Link)

We are curious if the Captain of the U.S. Army gets leave to join the ball and if Hope Solo will accompany him.

The Officers of the Austrian Armed Forces are your hosts

The officers invite you to one of Vienna’s grandest occasions on 20 January in the magnificent Hofburg Palace. Celebrating with friends, meeting officers in their eye-catching uniforms, representatives from industry or famous artists and sportspersons, dancing and spending a memorable evening: only the Officers’ Ball can offer all this, and more.

Fotoshooting with the Dancing Stars

The Officers’ Ball is the ball of all officers of the Austrian Armed Forces. Women in uniform have become routine in the Austrian Armed Forces, but for the general public, the term “officer” still seems to denote a man. The female officers want to show that they fulfil their tasks and missions within the Armed Forces on a par with, and to the same high standard as, their male comrades. In a photo shoot with the professional dancers of Austrian TV’s hit show Dancing Stars they showed how professionally they approach a new challenge. The Officers’ Ball best expresses the officers’ tradition, embedded in Viennese social life. Our female officers impressed with their grace and elegance – see for yourself in the Video.

The Officers’ Ball – a cultural heritage of the UNESCO

In October 2010, the Ball was awarded intangible national cultural heritage status by the UNESCO. Every one is familiar with Vienna’s splendorous and posh traditional ball events, such as, for example, the Philharmonic Ball, the Confectioners’ Ball, the Coffee House Owners’ Ball or the Concordia Ball, taking place in summer, and, last but not the least, the Officers’ Ball. All these balls represent a cultural institution, the roots of which go back to the Congress of Vienna, undergoing their first big upturn in the Biedermeier period.
